Mikhail Zhernenkov

Physicist, NSLS-II SMI Lead Beamline Scientist

Dr. Zhernenkov joined NSLS-II in April 2013. Upon completion of his PhD in 2008 at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia and the Institute Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France, Dr. Zhernenkov joined Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) as a Postdoctoral Research Associate where he was using (un)polarized neutron scattering for studying magnetic/non-magnetic thin films/ multilayers and biological membranes. While working at LANL he was also delegated duties of an instrument scientist for reflectometer ASTERIX.

Prior to arriving at Brookhaven, Dr. Zhernenkov held the position of postdoctoral fellow at Argonne National Laboratory in the Magnetic Material Group at the APS, Sector 4, beam line 4-ID-D. At APS he studied magnetic and electronic properties of materials at high pressures, low temperatures, and high magnetic fields by XMCD and XANES.

As a Lead Beamline Scientist at the Soft Matter Interfaces (SMI) beamline, Dr. Zhernenkov is developing and broadening the user community, which will benefit from the core SMI capabilities: time-resolved (GI)SAXS/WAXS and Liquid Interface X-ray scattering with energy range 2.1-24 keV for studying structure and assembly in soft matter.
Targeted research communities include (but not limited to):
- Bulk and interface structure of soft/bio/hard-material architectures (polymers, biominerals, 3D nanostructures)
- Time-resolved study of non-equilibrium, processing conditions, in-situ reactions
- Resonant scattering for bio- and hybrid materials, organic electronics
- Liquid interface scattering
